NEW WORK
AT COMPANY ONE
Through a combination of personalized dramaturgy, workshops, and professional development programs, Company One Theatre’s New Work department is an incubator of new work for writers of varied experience levels and backgrounds.
C1’s New Work team works closely with the artists of our mainstage productions to provide robust dramaturgical support, helping to realize a play’s full potential and creating connections between our audiences and artistic work. Our programs aim to provide professional development that aligns with C1’s mission of nurturing civically-engaged artists and creating a more equitable city.

PLAYWRIGHT OPPORTUNITIES
If you are an artist interested in the work we do at C1, we would love to hear from you! Company One supports artists at a range of career levels, and considers new works both for production and development opportunities as part of our season planning. If you are considering whether your work is a good fit for C1, you may find it helpful to keep some of the following information in mind:
At Company One, our work is rooted in principles of joy, innovation, and the theatrically ‘impossible.’ We gravitate towards work that is bold and ambitious in scope, that creates space for voices that have been historically excluded from American theatre, and that tells those stories with care.
C1 envisions a Boston defined by justice, equity, and artistic innovation. As such, we look for playwrights who center civic or community action in their creative practice, and are excited by plays that respond to and advance the dialogue on social justice issues that are impacting our communities right now.
While we consider works from artists from all over, C1 is especially interested in bringing stories to our stage that have hyperlocal resonance with our audiences. If you or your work have a specific connection to a Boston community or neighborhood, we would love to hear about it!
How to connect with us:
Interested artists are encouraged to fill out our New Work Interest Form! This form is an opportunity to share a bit more about yourself and your work for our New Work team to review as opportunities arise. We review and respond to form submissions on a rolling basis, and would love to hear from you!
PLAYLAB PROGRAM HISTORY
Since its founding, Company One has served as an incubator of bold new theatre, with our New Work team supporting the development of new plays that have gone on to our stages and beyond. While our department has gone through different iterations over the years, our work with artists has always centered a commitment to the creative process, plays that give voice to bold and joyful stories, and new works created through collaboration and community care. In service of the stories we tell and the audiences we share them with, our work seeks to disrupt the limits of the typical theatre-making and theatre-going experience.
Look below at how C1 has engaged new work throughout our history!
In Season 19, we presented the world premiere of Idris Goodwin’s Hype Man, which has continued to live on as a focal point in our Education department’s Anti-Racism Residencies. By thinking about our new work and its impact holistically, we strive to find ways for new plays to live past a single production and continue serving our community.
Our world premiere of Greater Good in Season 20 showcased the work of our brilliant Playwright in Residence, Kirsten Greenidge. Presented in classrooms at the Commonwealth School, our site-specific production embraced unconventional approaches to new work, bringing this story to life in an exciting challenge to our artists and unique experience for our audiences.
Our work on local artist Francisca Da Silveira’s can i touch it? (season 23) allowed us to extend a new play’s life, this time bringing this hyperlocal story’s universal message to audiences nationally through the National New Play Network’s Rolling World Premiere program.
In our most recent history, our development and world premiere of Tara Moses’ Haunted (season 26) was a part of our Public Art for Public Good initiative. The piece has been connected to our work from draft 0, as part of the New Work department’s Flux Lab program.
Collaborating with artists to realize plays unique in scale and scope, we work to meet new plays where they are and provide bespoke dramaturgical and developmental resources to these stories as they unfold. In addition to our robust new work history in our productions, our lab programs have taken many forms, from the women-centred PlayLab flagship program, to our Open Write panels, and more. Through these programs, we have engaged artists like Lauren Yee, Tara Moses, Lydia Diamond, Kit Yan, Melissa Li, and more.
