NEW WORK
AT COMPANY ONE

Through a combination of personalized dramaturgy, workshops, and professional development programs, Company One Theatre’s New Work department is an incubator of new work for writers of varied experience levels and backgrounds.

C1’s New Work team works closely with the artists of our mainstage productions to provide robust dramaturgical support, helping to realize a play’s full potential and creating connections between our audiences and artistic work. Our programs aim to provide professional development that aligns with C1’s mission of nurturing civically-engaged artists and creating a more equitable city.

Explore below for more information on some of our current offerings and program history!

If you are an artist interested in the work we do at C1, we would love to hear from you! Company One supports artists at a range of career levels, and considers new works both for production and development opportunities as part of our season planning. If you are considering whether your work is a good fit for C1, you may find it helpful to keep some of the following information in mind:

  • At Company One, our work is rooted in principles of joy, innovation, and the theatrically ‘impossible.’ We gravitate towards work that is bold and ambitious in scope, that creates space for voices that have been historically excluded from American theatre, and that tells those stories with care.

  • C1 envisions a Boston defined by justice, equity, and artistic innovation. As such, we look for playwrights who center civic or community action in their creative practice, and are excited by plays that respond to and advance the dialogue on social justice issues that are impacting our communities right now.

  • While we consider works from artists from all over, C1 is especially interested in bringing stories to our stage that have hyperlocal resonance with our audiences. If you or your work have a specific connection to a Boston community or neighborhood, we would love to hear about it!

How to connect with us:
Interested artists are encouraged to fill out our New Work Interest Form! This form is an opportunity to share a bit more about yourself and your work for our New Work team to review as opportunities arise. We review and respond to form submissions on a rolling basis, and would love to hear from you!

Company One’s New Work programs have gone through many iterations over the years. In 2011, we launched a program collaboratively designed with the Boston Center for the Arts, highlighting new works by women. The annual festival format shifted in 2014 to a Lab-based model that supports writers of all gender identities, at different stages of their careers. In 2017, we began offering PlayLab Bootcamp convenings, providing creative and professional development intensives, open to anyone.

As Covid-19 shuttered opportunities for in-person programming, we reformulated the initiative entirely as the digital C1 PlayLab Circuit, with two prongs of activity: The Circuit Labs, including Volt Lab, Surge Lab, and Flux Lab, which closely supported small groups of writers working with staff dramaturgs on specific writing projects; and the Open Circuit, free events which evolved out of PlayLab Bootcamp, and which included master classes with guest artists on topics of creative and professional development.

In 2024, the Volt Lab evolved again to become Co-Lab, which matched playwrights with dramaturgs and directors for collaborative projects. As of Season 27, Co-Lab is temporarily on pause.

Our comprehensive program history below documents the incredible number of writers and guest artists who have been part of this important work.
