What does the 2025 Spring Benefit support?
All proceeds support Company One’s mission to build community at the intersection of art and social change. Your support at the event allows us to continue creating dynamic theatrical events and amplifying urgent issues that impact systemically and historically marginalized communities in Boston. We bring our art and education into community spaces, classrooms, and publicly accessible, city-owned spaces across Boston so that theatre as public art for public good is accessible to all! Since our founding in 1998, we’ve reached over 2000 artists, 15,000+ students, and 100,000+ audience members.
Is my donation tax deductible?
The fair market value of nondeductible goods and services received at the 2025 Spring Benefit is $90 per ticket. U.S. Government regulations prohibit payment for event sponsorship or tickets from exempt organizations, including donor-advised funds (DAF) and bifurcation of grants (splitting the deductible portion from the non-deductible portion of the grant). Company One recommends that Benefit attendees consult their donor-advised fund manager, tax advisor, and/or legal counsel for definitive tax guidance. Company One is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization; the organization’s tax identification number is 04-3444644.
Who will be hosting this year’s event?
Krystal Hernandez is a Puerto Rican actor, singer, dancer from Waltham, MA. She is currently playing Anna of Cleves on Broadway in SIX: the Musical following her reign in the Canadian company of SIX: the Musical also as Cleves. She has performed on stages across North America, including a regional tour of Octavio Solis’ Quixote Nuevo. She has had the pleasure of leading shows in many of Greater Boston’s most prestigious stages: starring as Olivia in American Repertory Theater and Company One’s co-production of Miss You Like Hell performed at the Oberon (now Arrow Arts Center), as the Lion in Wheelock Family Theatre’s Wizard of Oz where she sang King of the Forest in the original key(!!!), and as the Nurse in Trinity Repertory’s co-production Shakespeare en el Verano of Romeo and Juliet. She has been obsessed with story telling since she can remember. Her passion really lies in using her voice and body as a vessel to tell stories that heal, challenge and embrace the human experience. As a Puerto Rican actress, she strives to add to the canon of what it means to live through the Latinx experience and to redefine stereotypes that come with that. She holds a BFA in Acting from Salem State University.

As part of the evening’s festivities, C1 is thrilled to present Impact Awards to three community members who exemplify the Company One mission through their art and activism.

Phyllis Bretholtz — Impact in Service
After almost thirty years of teaching English at Cambridge Rindge and Latin School, Phyllis left to begin her next career as both an educational consultant and a photographer. While there are many photography projects she has been involved in over these twenty five years, there are a few that have captured her major interest. The longest standing project is the documentation of the Antrim Street annual block party. For almost thirty years, she has set a goal of creating a strong visual record of all her neighbors, in portraits and family groups at the annual block party. This then led to taking portraits and neighborhood street scenes for the recently published From the Heart of Cambridge: The Longfellow Oral History Project (2011). Second in longevity is her documentation of the Boston Arts Academy. Since the school opened in August of 1998 – 2020, she was the visual archivist, capturing major events and creating idiosyncratic senior portraits. She has photographed weddings and bar mitzvah’s, events for the Cambridge Arts Council and the Cambridge Women’s Commission, a two and a half year record of the earliest construction of North Point in East Cambridge, and most recently, a project to document the City of Cambridge in all of the major squares and main streets from the spring of 2009 – December 2011. In addition, she has photographed special events like the Company One celebration of Lydia Diamond, created both theater and business professional head shots and is currently documenting a series of collaborations between a visiting artist and middle school teachers in the Cambridge public schools. She has been a Commissioner on both the Cambridge Arts Council and the Cambridge Women’s Commission, a member of the Board of Advocates of Boston Arts Academy, is involved in very local Cambridge politics and at least one international political project, the Cambridge-Bethlehem People to People Project. She was a founding member of the Inman Square Neighborhood Association.
